THIS ISSUE:
WHAT’S NEW ! Our Ad on the Click to Donate Site “Saverainforest.net” expired a few weeks ago. We agreed to pay an additional 5 cents for every click through to the LinkOn Center and a dime for everyone who signed up to be a LinkOn Center Patron. As a result, we will be donating an additional $75 to this worthy charity. Thanks for your support. We will be sponsoring other donate to click Sites in the near future. We’ll put a link to the charity above the Click to Donate Table. In the mean time, click on the Favorite Charities Link from our Home Page and support some worthy causes. Our Web Hosting Company recently moved us to a new and faster Server. This should improve the speed at which our pages are loaded. We’ve recently added a Table ( Fr7 ) of FREE WEB Storage Sites on our Freebies Page. (www.linkoncenter.com/freebies2.htm) You can securely store files on the servers of these Sites for free. (They usually provide 25 megabytes) Although they say they are secure, you may not want to store sensitive material (Tax records etc.) on these sites, but it’s a good place for backing up your favorite music and picture files.
Zwallet.com (www.zwallet.com/index.html?user=tevar) is a free web based E-mail service that pays you per
page view while using their service. So
every time you read or write E-mail you’re earning money. They also have a referral payment system.
If you don’t already have a web based E-mail account this is a good one
to have. The advantages of a web
based E-mail system is that you can access your mail from anywhere and if you
change your Internet Service Provider you don’t have to send all your friends
a change of address.
Try out our new and improved Grab Bags Page.
If you’re not sure where you want to go on the WEB, just click on a
Grab Bag and see where it takes you. Most
Sites are a little out of the ordinary, but sometimes we put some practical
sites there as well. We are
changing the links more frequently
now. So that you don’t waste time clicking on to one you’ve already seen, we
now put a date under each bag so you’ll know when it was added.
If you want to revisit one you’ve been to that was dropped from the
Grab Bag Page, you’ll find it on the Grab Bag Archives Page.
We’ve added another way for you to get the News on The LinkOn Center.
In addition to the iSyndicate news feeds, you can now grab the headlines
from News Tickers provided by 7am.com. Get
their locations from the Info Bar on the right hand side of our HOME Page.
There is also a Daily Poll provided by 7am.com on our HOME Page. WHAT’S NEW ON THE ‘NETThe Learning Kingdom, publisher of “the Cool Fact of the Day”, Cool Word of the Day and much more, has decided to abandon Ads as a way of paying for their services. They are now charging an $8 a year subscription fee. The fee covers all of their newsletters so if you subscribe to more than one you still pay only 8 bucks. As the Internet Ad Market gets tighter you may see more services going this route. (See Editorial below) A recent casualty in the dot.com shakeouts is AllAdvantage. (A Pay to Surf Site) Buy.com had a big shakeup at the top and some question whether or not they’ll survive. EToys is just filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection. A Washington-state high school student who was suspended for producing a Web-site parody of a school official has won $10,000 in damages from a free-speech lawsuit. Karl Beidler was expelled from Timberlane High School in January 1999 after making online images that inserted the assistant principal into a Viagra commercial, a Nazi book-burning scene and a cartoon sex-scene. A judge ruled last July that the school couldn't punish Beidler for outside expression, and this week's decision finalized an agreement in which the school system will pay Beidler's attorney fees, plus the damages. America Online is at it again…this time in France. They’ve been accused by a French Court of false advertising in their recent 99 francs a month promotion. (About 13 US Dollars) There were numerous complaints of trouble connecting or being knocked off the service. The court directed AOL to do a number of improvements, including disconnecting the timers that sometimes limited access to a half hour. AOL will appeal, and stated that they had spent 86 million dollars since last fall to improve their system. (Have you seen the latest free CD’s for AOL version 6.0. They offer 700 free hours ….for the first month! Do the math. For a 31 day month you would have to be online over 22 ˝ hours a day to use them all up) On a similar issue, the few people I know that use MSN as their ISP in the Milwaukee area have been having trouble getting connected. Does this have anything to do with their recent $400 rebates? You’d think that they would be better able to anticipate the responses to these promos and upgrade their systems BEFOREHAND! An SEC filing by Corel suggests that Microsoft may be planning to sell its minority stake in the software firm after receiving pressure from the Department of Justice. Here's some scary news for Napster and any other companies with subscription plans – Net users are fundamentally opposed to fees. Computing Tips
Defragging (For
Windows based PCs) A much neglected maintenance task is Defragging. Defragging a Drive organizes the files on that Drive for faster access. This not only improves the speed of your computer but also results in less work for your Hard Drive. If you add a lot of files and/or programs to your computer, you should defrag at least once a month. One of the problems people often encounter when defragging is that the process will go along fine for awhile and then suddenly stop and start over from the beginning. This is usually the result of programs that are running in the background. So before you defrag hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete and see what’s running. You can usually “End Task” on most of what you see there except for Explorer & Systray. It is especially important to End Task on any anti-Virus Program you may have running. (The file name typically starts with the letters Av) Now that you’ve done that you can access the Defragmenting utility in Windows 95 or above by going to the Accessories Program from the Windows Menu and then clicking on System Tools and the Disk Defragmenter. Another way is to go to My Computer and right click on the icon of the drive you want to defrag and scroll down to and click on the “Properties” button. The advantage of this method is that the box that comes up with your drive information (if you have Windows 98 SE or Windows ME) has a button labeled “Disk Cleanup.” This is an easy way to delete temporary internet files and empty your recycle bin. You may want to do that before you defrag. Once you’ve done that hit the Tools Tab and then the Defragment Now button. Once it gets started another box will pop up. You can press the Show Details button if you want to observe the defragging process. Copying & Pasting from Web Pages (For Windows based PCs)If you’re doing some serious research on the WEB (go to our Educational Category for the best Reference Sites) and you’ve found some useful information that you want to save or print here is a tip for the most economical way to do that. If you simply go to the File tab of your browser and then hit “Print” it will print everything on that Page including those colorful banner ads. This can waste a lot of time and ink, especially if you only want a few paragraphs from that page. Instead use your mouse pointer and left click over the paragraphs you want. This will highlight the text. Then hit Ctrl + C to copy the text to your clipboard. You can now open your favorite Word Processor (or Word Pad from Accessories on your Windows Menu) and Paste it into a new File by hitting Ctrl + V. Then hit the Save or Save As tab from the drop down Menu under the File Tab and give the file a name you can remember. Now when you print it from this file you’ll only be using black ink, and you’ll only be printing what you really want. BRIEF EDITORIAL: The internet is FREE right?! Wrong! It cost money to develop and maintain a Web Site. Commercial Sites, like their paper counterparts (Magazines & Newspapers) make their money through Advertising. The larger Sites are able to charge per Page View. Anytime you see one of their pages they are getting paid for the Banner Ads that you see. Smaller Sites usually get paid either on a per click basis. (You have to actually click on the Banner before the Site gets a fee) or by a percentage of the sale that results from a click-through … or a combination of both. So if you like a Site, instead of cursing at the Banner Ads, click on one once in awhile. With the tight market for Online Advertising this is becoming a problem for many marginal, but really excellent Sites. The only alternative to Advertising as a revenue source is a subscription fee…and we don’t want that do we? Finally, if you find a Site that you like be sure to tell your friends, because high traffic is really the name of the game.
