WHAT’S NEW !

We’ve completed the Table on Post-Modern American Poets on our Poets/Poetry Page (www.linkoncenter.com/poetry.htm )  Enrich your life by clicking onto the Site of one (or more) of the talented poets we’ve included there.  Most of the Sites  have brief biographies of the poets as well as samples of their work. If we missed your favorite, submit your favorite poet’s Site by clicking on a Suggest a Site link.

Click on to your favorite Classical Music Sites at the Classical Music Page (www.linkoncenter.com/classical.htm )  There is a new page in the Music Category…Miscellaneous Music Genres. (www.linkoncenter.com/misc1.htm )  For now it only contains Reggae & Cajun/Zydeco, but we’re open to suggestions for additional genres.

Just for fun we’ve placed a Random Riddle & a Bogglers puzzle on our Home Page.  There is also a new section below the Trivia Tidbits that gives a list of famous people with birthdays for the current day.

The Impressionists Artists Table has been completed on the Artists Page (www.linkoncenter.com/artists.htm )   We have a good start on the Surrealist Artists and will try to complete the other Tables within the next month. (Actually, no Table is ever complete as they can be edited whenever necessary.)

WHAT’S NEW ON THE ‘NET

Juno Pulls a Fast One

Juno, a “Free” (or $12.95 per month for premium service) Internet Service Provider, recently instituted a clever new method of generating revenue for itself.  Their new agreement (for the entire agreement go to http://help.juno.com/privacy/agreement.html)  allows them to use your computer to crunch data. To do this you are required to install their “computational software”.   When you are online Juno can send your computer its data to work on and then send back to them.  If you’re not online at the time that its finished, it will connect to the internet for you.  Read the fine print.   Depending on what level you signed up for, simply unplugging your computer to get around this little chore could give them cause to terminate your service. As a result of this recent development, we have decided to drop Juno from our Table of Free ISPs on our Freebies Page.  It is just a matter of time before totally Free ISPs will become extinct.

“Homepage” Virus Alert

With “worm” kits readily available on the internet, almost anyone can make a virus.  One of the latest ones to hit the internet is called “Homepage”. If you get an E-mail  with Homepage in the Subject line with the following message: Hi! You’ve got to see this page!  It’s really cool ;O   There will be an attachment …Homepage.html.vbs.  DON’T OPEN IT!  If you do it will send a copy to everyone in your address book and choose a random adult web page to display on the system’s default internet browser.  Remember to update your ant-virus software often and always be careful about what attachments you open.

Ford Expands its program with PeoplePC

Ford is expanding its program to provide employees with subsidized brand name PCs and internet access through PeoplePC for $5 per month.  They may have as many as 400,000 participants soon.  The program was started in February of 2000.

More Casualties …

LifeMinders has laid off about 80% of its workforce

Bidland indefinitely suspended operations on May 13th.

Rx.com is gone.

Computing Tips

Viewing Pages Offline

If you don’t have time to view a Web Page you can always view it “Offline”.  If you have Internet Explorer 5 or above & you want to view a page offline do the following: First add it to your Favorites Folder. Then choose Favorites, then Add to Favorites.  The Add Favorites Dialog Box appears.  You can rename the Page here if you like.  Next click the box marked “Make Available Offline” & then click OK.

Windows Menu (Windows ME)

You may have noticed that after using Windows ME for a while it’s Menu will only show the programs that you’ve accessed recently. To see the rest of the Menu  click the two little downward arrows at the bottom of the Menu.  Windows will then display the rest of the menu options.

The “LinkOn Center” Philosophy:

There are two main goals of “The LinkOn Center”.  The first is to provide links to quality Web Sites.  The second is to organize those links for easy access.  We all have our favorite, quality Sites and we bookmark them.  The problem is that over time our bookmark file overflows and becomes impossible to keep organized.  We hope that our Table format will make it unnecessary for you to wade through most of your bookmarks.  It is also our hope that you will find it easier to use the Web for its most noble purpose as the ultimate learning tool.  (Of course we also link to Sites that don’t strictly meet that definition…like Game Sites)  Instead of just using the Internet for a few routine tasks like e-mail and checking your portfolio, take some time out to visit a History Museum or an Art Museum.  Go to our Arts/Culture Category and learn about a Poet or an Author.  Visit the Science/Tech Category and click on an Astronomy Site or a Biology Site. The News Media Category can connect you with Newspapers from all over the world.  In short, use “The LinkOn Center” to enrich your life.
