WHAT’S NEW ON THE ‘NET

19% of Teens on the Internet Receive Unwanted Sexual Solicitations

According to a poll of 1500 youths between the ages of 10 to 17, 19% have been solicited for sex.  This includes requests to engage in sex, sex talk or to give personal sexual information. The poll was conducted by the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, in Durham.  Girls and older youths between 14 and 17 were more likely to be solicited.  Those who used the Internet frequently and participated in chat rooms were at higher risk.

Parental oversight of children's online activities and filtering or blocking technology did not have much impact on whether children were solicited.

Four Companies Charged in $175 million Pyramid Scheme

SkyBiz.com (Tulsa, OK)  and three partner companies were charged in connection with a work-at home business scheme that charged people $125 for a software kit and an opportunity to earn money by selling others the educational package.  The recruits would have to buy one or more packages and then earn commissions by recruiting new members.  The FTC filed charges on May 30th.

The four Oklahoma companies named in the lawsuit are SkyBiz.com Inc.; World Service Corporation; Nanci Corporation International; and WorldWide Service Corporation.

Joel Wohlgemuth, lawyer for most of the SkyBiz defendants, said "We certainly deny that there is any illegal scheme."

E-Mail Tax Hoax

An old E-mail hoax that continues to bounce around the Internet claims that there is a Bill pending in Congress that would tax the E-Mail you receive.  The 5 cent a message tax would be used to help subsidize the U.S. Postal Service.  Included below is a copy of a press release from the Postal Service…notice the date!

E-MAIL RUMOR COMPLETELY UNTRUE

WASHINGTON – A completely false rumor concerning the U.S. Postal Service is being circulated on Internet e-mail. As a matter of fact, the Postal Service has learned that a similar hoax occurred recently in Canada concerning Canada Post.

The e-mail message claims that a "Congressman Schnell" has introduced "Bill 602P" to allow the federal government to impose a 5-cent surcharge on each e-mail message delivered over the Internet. The money would be collected by Internet Service Providers and then turned over to the Postal Service.

No such proposed legislation exists. In fact, no "Congressman Schnell" exists.

The U.S. Postal Service has no authority to surcharge e-mail messages sent over the Internet, nor would it support such legislation.

These, and similar hoaxes, do nothing but waste people’s time and Internet bandwidth. Go to our Computing Page for Links to Sites that can educate you on the latest hoaxes.

Computing Tips

Snatching Desk Top Wallpaper from the Internet

How many times have you visited a Site and found a great picture that you wanted to place on your Desk Top as Wallpaper?  In most cases it’s a very simple task.  In Windows 95, 98 & ME you simply right click inside the picture. When the drop down menu appears click the “Set as Wallpaper” button.  This sets it immediately as Wallpaper.  If you think you’ll want to keep the image in your permanent Wallpaper Gallery you’ll have to jump through a few hoops.  In Windows 95, 98 & ME the file will initially be named “Internet Explorer Wallpaper.”   If you don’t change the name of the file, the next time you grab an image off the Internet it will replace that image.  To permanently save the image, go into your Windows directory (Using Explorer or My Computer) & find the Internet Explorer Wallpaper file.  Right click on the file, left click on “Rename” from the drop down menu and give it a descriptive name that you’ll remember.  In Windows ME an easier way is to go back to the image after you’ve clicked “Set as Wallpaper” and right click it again.  Now click  the “Save Picture as…” button.  This will place it in the “My Pictures Folder.”    Now when you go into the Display Settings (through Control Panel or by right clicking anywhere on your Desk Top) and click the Background Tab the picture should be in your collection.

Visit our Computing Page (www.linkoncenter.com/computin.htm#Cw ) for Links to Sites that provide a vast array of FREE Wallpaper images.  Also check out some of the suggested LinkOn Center Pages for other Sites that have images suitable for great backgrounds.

The “LinkOn Center” Philosophy:

There are two main goals of “The LinkOn Center”.  The first is to provide links to quality Web Sites.  The second is to organize those links for easy access.  We all have our favorite, quality Sites and we bookmark them.  The problem is that over time our bookmark file overflows and becomes impossible to keep organized.  We hope that our Table format will make it unnecessary for you to wade through most of your bookmarks.  It is also our hope that you will find it easier to use the Web for its most noble purpose as the ultimate learning tool.  (Of course we also link to Sites that don’t strictly meet that definition…like Game Sites)  Instead of just using the Internet for a few routine tasks like e-mail and checking your portfolio, take some time out to visit a History Museum or an Art Museum.  Go to our Arts/Culture Category and learn about a Poet or an Author.  Visit the Science/Tech Category and click on an Astronomy Site or a Biology Site. The News Media Category can connect you with Newspapers from all over the world.  In short, use “The LinkOn Center” to enrich your life.
