The latest worm (a form of computer Virus) to make the news is the SirCam Worm. As of this week it had infected over 144,000 computers according to McAfee, a major ant-virus software firm. It hasn’t reached epidemic proportions due to the fact that corporate e-mail systems have become much more vigilant since last years Love Letter and Melissa virus outbreaks.
Like other worms, it spreads by e-mailing copies of itself to everyone in the infected computers address book. It also sends itself to any addresses contained in the Web browser’s cache file. The worst feature of SirCam is that it randomly sends a file from the infected computer’s hard drive. This carries the risk of transferring confidential business information or embarrassing personal files. For more information on what’s being called The Year of the Worm, check out the excellent article from C/NET using the following link: http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-201-5125673-0.html?tag=st.ne.1003.saslnk.saseml
Napster, once the most popular music file sharing Site, has seen its usage plummet by 65% in the month of June. The New York based research firm Jupider Media Metrix reports that the number of users has declined by 31 percent. Several new services are filling the gap that was created by Napster’s legal problems with the recording Industry over copyright issues. (We have links to the new ones on our MP3 Table on the main Music Page… www.linkoncenter.com/music.htm ) Napster was given a short reprieve by the Courts allowing them to temporarily restart its service online. Eventually they will be back up with a paid service.
John Ashcroft, U.S. Attorney General , announced that federal officials would crackdown on cybercrime by beefing up 10 specialized units that work at catching hackers and pirates.
The CHIP squads (Computer Hacking & Intellectual Property) will focus on copyright theft, computer fraud and hacking. "There's this idea somehow that you can get away with it here," Ashcroft said. "That's an idea we must curtail. There are no free passes in cyberspace."
Ashcroft also scolded tech firms for not always reporting to law enforcement agencies when their networks have been compromised. . "A company that does not report crime leaves the criminal free to strike again." Companies are often afraid of the negative publicity that goes along with admitting that they’ve been victimized.

The Hunger Site just died of starvation.
eSave is on the ropes.
AOL Time Warner just invested $100 million in Amazon.com
Note: This tip applies to Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows Me.
If you’ve ever visited a Web Site and forgot to Bookmark it, all is not lost. If you have Internet Explorer you can access the History List that it maintains to try to retrieve it.
To view the History List, click the History button or select View, Explorer Bar, History.
IBooks has a safety feature that prevents the loss of what’s in memory in the event of a complete power loss. What it does is copies what’s in memory to an invisible file on your hard drive where it is safe even when the computer loses its electrical supply. To turn on this feature do the following:
1. Choose Apple menu, Control Panels, Energy Saver.
2. Click the Advanced button.
3. Turn on the option called "Save memory to disk before
sleeping."
4. Close the window.
5. From now on, your iBook takes longer to blink into
sleep; Apple even recommends that you not move the
machine for 20 seconds after closing the lid. But
you'll feel good, knowing that you've established a
safety net that will preserve your work in progress,
even if you haven't saved it, and even if you lose both
your power cord AND your battery.
A
Few Words from the Editor & WebSlave
When I first started “The LinkOn Center” I
wanted to make it somewhat “interactive”.
The idea was to let the visitors have a say in what goes into it. This has worked on a personal level. Many of my friends have suggested different Tables and
Categories which I’ve gladly added to the Site.
So to all of you Cyber Friends and Patrons…don’t be shy! Feel free to use the many Suggest a Site links to share your
favorite Sites and ideas with the rest of us.
If you feel the forms are too restricting feel free to send an e-mail to
my personal e-mail address, Tevar21@hotmail.com.
(Put the Word “Suggestion” in the Subject line) I look forward to hearing
your suggestions as to how I can improve “The LinkOn Center”.
