2. Computer & Internet News

Intel offers 1.1Ghz & 1.1 Ghz Celeron Chips

Intel will soon launch a 1Ghz & a 1.1 Ghz Celeron Chips.  Celeron

chips are used in low cost computers.  Dell is already advertising a

Dimension 2100 desktop with the 1.1 Ghz Celeron chip, 128 MB of RAM

 and a 15 inch monitor for $888.

Two New Search Engines Challenge Google

Two new start-ups are aiming to improve on the immensely popular

recipe for serving fast, relevant search results untainted by

pay-for-placement listings. New Jersey-based Teoma went live

with a test version in June and  California based Wisenut, launched

this month.  They both imitate Google by sporting stripped-down

Internet sites and touting unique technology for ranking the billions

of pages that make up the World Wide Web.  They have also

refused to follow a recent trend of selling placement within search

results to advertisers.

New Virus Falsley Claims to Fix SirCam Virus

If you get an email with something like “New antivirus tool” in the

Subject Line…beware.  It’s actually a virus that mimics SirCam by

using your default mail client to spread itself.  It will also start to

randomly delete your files. It’s being called the All3gro or Allgro Virus

For more info go to :

3. More Casualties …

WebMD is laying off about half of its workers … about 140 people.

Coupon site Save.com is, for all intents and purposes, dead.

Gateway Computers is laying off about 5000 workers worldwide.

Rumor has it that Gomez.com, an internet Shoppers Guide laid off another

25 people.  This brings their workforce down to about 70 people compared

with 145 six months ago.

4. Computing Tips

Note: This tip applies to Microsoft Windows 98 and Windows Me.

The My Computer and Windows Explorer programs don't always list the files

currently sitting on a disk drive. To make sure you’re seeing everything you can

make the programs take a second look by pressing the F5 key along the top of

your keyboard.

You Can Change IE 5.X Font Size With The Scroll Wheel

If you who have a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can easily change the font

size in Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x without taking your hand off of the

mouse.  Just hold down the Ctrl key and scroll the wheel to increase or decrease

 the font size.

Mac Tip

Software Update is a feature available with Mac OS 9 and later.

It checks for newer versions of your system software.  Go to its

control panel by selecting Apple Menu, Control Panels, Software Update.

(You have to have an Internet connection to use control panel.)

After opening the control panel, click the Update Now button.

This will connect you to the Internet (assuming your Internet

settings are correct), compares your software versions with the

current versions, and lets you know what it found. You can then

choose to actually download and install the new software.  You can

learn more about any update by clicking on it.

5. A Few Words from the Editor & WebSlave

Many of us are in a rut when it comes to our Surfing habits.  We spend most

of our time on the ‘net checking our e-mail,  portfolios, and checking account.

There’s nothing wrong with that I guess.  But think back to the first few

times you really discovered the internet.  Remember how amazed you were at the

vast amount of information that was now at your fingertips?   One way to regain

that feeling is to observe someone who is new to the internet.  Turn on a friend to

the ‘net and make it easy for them by letting them loose on “The LinkOn Center.”

Or just make a point of devoting some time each day or week to aimlessly

explore  the more noble side of the WEB.  Delve into our Science/Tech.Category

and visit a Science Museum or Zoo.  Go to our History Category and learn about

a great American President.  Read an English version of a foreign newspaper in our

News Media Category or connect to a Poem on our Poets/Poetry Page in the

Arts/Culture Category.   Check out the Hobbies/Pets Category or … well I

think you get idea.  Explore, Enjoy the WEB!

As always, feel free to send your comments and suggestions to:

Tevar21@hotmail.com. (Put the Word “Suggestion” in the Subject line) I look

forward to hearing your suggestions as to how I can improve

“The LinkOn Center”.  Share Your Addiction!
